The pale cream on the underside of the chin and the fawn color eye circle is clearly shown in this photograph.  The fawn color of the eye circle and inside of the ears provide a striking contrast with the jet-black body color and brown eyes.

The tan nostrils and triangle contribute to the Black Otter's distinctive pattern.

The pale cream over slate belly is shown in this picture.  And the pale cream belly is to be divided from the body by a distinct border of tan.

The belly color is one of the best parts of the Black Otter, because I know there is a white spot on his belly; it is just cleverly hidden.

The chest is to be an even mix of black and tan merging with the main body color.

Note that the forefeet are not entirely black as required by the standard.  Also this buck has a fault because of the tan hairs or ticking on his shoulder and front legs.  The ticking is not as evident on the shoulder in the Head photograph.

Belly

Chest

All of that for 5 pattern points.

The Black Otter will often have excellent fur texture which is common in black fur.  And with the added benefit of no white spots on the belly this is a nice variety to raise and show.

The latest sweepstake standings reports that for 2007 there have been 210 Black Otters shown.  They have won one Best in Show, one Reserve in Show, eight Best of Breeds and 27 Best Opposite of Breed.  Not to bad, only Brokens and Blacks have more Best in Show wins with two each.
